What are the treatments for OSA?
Traditional treatments include the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
treatment, and surgery, depending on the severity of the condition and the
doctor’s recommendation. A newer treatment, oral appliance therapy, which we
offer our patients, provides an effective, less invasive, and more
comfortable solution.
How does oral appliance therapy work?
An oral appliance is a custom-made acrylic device that is worn in the mouth
while sleeping to control the symptoms of snoring and OSA. The device moves
the base of the tongue forward, which prevents the collapse of the soft
tissue in the back of the throat and keeps the airway open.

The main
device we use is the Mandibular Advancement Appliance (MAD),
pictured here. It is made of a heat sensitive material that adapts
to the patient’s upper and lower teeth. With our instructions, the
patient can adjust the device to achieve maximum benefit. It’s
small, durable, easy to travel with, and is well-tolerated. Oral
appliance therapy is effective for treating people who snore and
those with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. |
